ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), serious biomarkers (liver function tests and renal functions tests) (urea, creatinine, GOT, GPT, and LDH) are determined immediate to assess in prognosis of the severity of disease. AIM: The aim of the study was to determine correlation between biomarkers (liver function tests and renal functions tests) (urea, creatinine, GOT, GPT, and LDH) among COVID-19 patients. METHOD(S): A cross-sectional study, a total of 90 COVID-19 patients who attending in the Al-Hussein Medical City in Karbala, Iraq, participated in the present study within a month's time in late December 2021 to early January of 2022. All COVID-19 patients with positive SARS-COV-2 real-time RT-PCR results were reviewed. The patients were classifying according SPO2 into three groups (mild, moderate, and severe groups). The demographic data (sex, age, and SPO2 ) were collected while the biomarkers (liver function tests and renal functions tests) for all patients were done by bio-base instrument (ACCENT-200 ALAT KIT). RESULT(S): The white blood cell "WBC" and neutrophil in moderate and severe groups had substantially greater counts (p = 0.005) when compared with mild group while lymphocytes were considerably decreased in the severe and moderate groups (p = 0.005). In the moderate group, there was positive significant correlation among neutrophils and serum LDH (r = 0.451*, p = 0.014). There was no significant correlation between neutrophils and liver function tests. Furthermore, in the moderate patient group, a strong positively correlating notably among lymphocytes and serum LDH. Moreover, the concentration of serum GOT, GPT, and LDH (p = 0.05, p = 0.08, and p = 0.5) was higher levels in severe group when compared to moderate and mild groups, on the other hand, the renal function tests (urea and creatinine) were high serum levels in severe group than mild and moderate groups. CONCLUSION(S): The serum concentration of urea, creatinine, GOPT, GPT, and LDH was high in severe COVID-19 patients group, although there was no statistically significant in ALP, GPT, and urea among COVID-19 patient's groups (mild, moderate, and severe group). ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the magnitude of abnormal organ function tests and biomarkers in hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 and to define the association among markers of organ failure, disease severity and its outcome in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Ethiopia. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted among COVID-19 patients admitted to Millennium COVID-19 Treatment Center from December 2020 to June 2021. Results: The median age of the 440 study participants was 60.3 ± 1.3 years, and from these 71.3% of patients were male. Disease severity: p-value: 0.032; adjusted odds ratio (AOR) (95% CI): 4.4 (0.022-0.085); and the presence of any co-morbidity; p-value: 0.012; AOR (95% CI): 0.80 (0.47-0.83) was significantly associated with mortality. Aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase parameter values of patients overall, were elevated - mainly among critical patients (56.9 ± 57.7, 58.5 ± 63 and 114.6 ± 60, respectively).

ABSTRACT

Background: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the novel corona virus first detected in Wuhan in 2019. nCOV belongs to the beta-corona virus cluster. As the third most highly pathogenic corona virus, the clinical presentations of 2019-nCoV infection resemble those of the other two corona viruses, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-CoV). The abnormalities in the laboratory indices particularly the Blood Biochemical parameters may be associated with the severity of multiple organ dysfunction seen in COVID-19. The aim of the present project was to analyze the laboratory diagnostic profile of sars-cov-2 (covid-19) patients & to study the associated factors.

ABSTRACT

Introduction There have been tremendous continuous efforts to understand the broad spectrum of disease and its sequelae since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Several studies have identified biomarkers that correlate with multiple organ failure in COVID-19 patients. The purpose of our study was to evaluate COVID-19-associated kidney injury. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at the Institute of Biochemistry, Madras Medical College, by reviewing the electronic records of 1,000 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed COVID-19-positive patients admitted at the COVID-19 care center. Data were extracted from the case records of 1,000 RT-PCR-positive patients with different CT chest grades plus comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), systemic hypertension (SHT), coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cerebrovascular accident (CVA) as Group I (n = 500). Group II (n = 500) comprised of COVID-19-positive patients with no comorbid conditions. The data were recorded from all the patients at the time of admission, prior to starting treatment. Patients with comorbid and non-comorbid conditions were compared according to different CT grades. Results COVID-19 patients with different CT grades showed a significant relationship with creatinine, sodium, potassium, C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, total protein, and albumin with p-values of 0.04, 0.01, 0.02, 0.000, 0.00, 0.00, and 0.000, respectively, in Group I. In Group II, with various grades of CT changes, the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and creatinine showed no significance. The sodium, potassium, CRP, ferritin, total protein, and albumin showed low significance with the chest CT grades. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that COVID-19 can cause mild to moderate renal impairment in COVID-19 patients. Multiple factors contributed to this, such as the higher angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression on kidney cells, microinflammation, increased blood clotting, and probable direct infection of the kidney. A high NLR, increased inflammatory markers, and altered renal function analytes such as urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, total protein, and albumin also confirmed this.
